The short answer
Keep seed protected from moisture and pests, and inspect it before filling the feeder. A labeled, manageable supply is easier to maintain than a large, forgotten bag.
Give every batch an identity
Write the purchase date and product name on the storage container. Keep new and old batches distinguishable so that the oldest usable food is used first. Do not hide suspect seed under a fresh top-up.
Make inspection easy
Use a scoop you can keep clean and dry. Before every refill, look for damp clumps, contamination, or an unusual smell. Discard spoiled food rather than mixing it into a larger supply.
Choose a routine you will keep
Set storage near a practical cleaning area, but not where rain or splashes can enter the container. Review how quickly the supply is used before buying a bigger bag. Smaller quantities can make inspection and rotation simpler.
