The short answer
Choose a shallow basin with a gentle approach and secure footing. Cornell recommends roughly one inch at the edge, increasing to no more than about two inches in the middle.
Measure the usable area
A product’s outside dimensions do not tell you how the basin fills. Measure the actual water depth at the edge and center on level ground. The useful question is where a bird can stand, not how much water the bowl can hold.
Make cleaning part of the location
Check whether you can empty and scrub the basin without awkward lifting. A beautiful heavy bowl that is difficult to drain may be harder to maintain than a smaller, accessible option.
Observe from a distance
After setting it up, keep the area calm and look for use from indoors. Do not move the basin repeatedly in response to one quiet day. Review nearby cover and possible hazards before changing the design.
